Chi Roca has a dead girl’s voice in her head. Nearly ten years ago, her older sister Aria drowned, leaving their family shattered — and Chi has been keeping the secret of Aria’s continued presence in her mind ever since.

But Aria had secrets of her own, and as Chi has gotten older she has begun to ask questions. When Aria’s presence disappears on Chi’s sixteenth birthday, Chi decides to try to find the answers, placing herself in the same danger that led to her sister’s death.

Half a Person is a story of grief and the connections it both breaks and forges.

Half a Person edition by Jennifer de Guzman Literature Fiction eBooks

Panchita "Chi" Roca is a typical teenager in many ways: She's confused and questioning, struggling to figure out the world, her identity, and her sexuality. What is different about Chi is that she still hears the voice of her sister Aria, ten years after Aria's death. Is the voice a ghost, evidence of mental illness, or just Chi's way of coping (or putting off coping) with her sister's sad fate? The book is noncommittal, and it becomes a moot point when Aria's voice abruptly goes silent on Chi's sixteenth birthday. It's only when Aria's comforting presence is removed that Chi really begins asking questions about what happened to her, and discovers things about her sister's life that she never knew. The book ventures into some uncomfortable territory, dealing with themes of suicide and underage sex, but these touchy subjects are handled with taste and compassion. de Guzman does an excellent job evoking Chi's young voice. She's not a precocious, wisecracking "Hollywood teenager", but an ordinary young woman trying to work her way through tragedy. There's a touch of "magic realism" here, beyond Aria's voice-from-the-grave, but it all works together to heighten Chi's struggle. It's an emotional, intriguing, and satisfying piece of work.

Just really bad writing. Tried this writer once before, more simplistic, uninteresting prose with nothing underneath. So so bad.
